The next time he opened his eyes, the red-robed priest was back again. Rylan couldn’t see his face through the man’s veil, but he could see his eyes. They were dark brown, much like Shade’s, though older and harder. The skin sagged over his eyelids, and a spiderweb of wrinkles creased the corners.

Rylan stretched, testing his strength. He was still weak, still exhausted. But the fire inside had subsided. More than anything, he felt a horrible thirst.

Seeing him awake, the priest bent over him and asked, “How is it possible that you have returned to us?”

“What?” Rylan’s voice creaked like old hinges.

“The Custodian has been dead for thousands of years. Yet, today he has returned. How is this possible?”

Rylan tried to lift his head but gave up quickly. It was too heavy, and he didn’t have the strength. Weakly, he asked, “How… do you know… who I am?”

The priest drew back. He clutched the arms of the chair he had pulled up to Rylan’s bedside. “Eight thousand years is a long time. But our memory is longer.”

“How?” Rylan whispered, intensely confused.

The man stood up, lacing his fingers together in front of him. That steady gaze stared downward, boring into him. Almost, Rylan could make out the silhouette of the man’s face beneath the thin red veil he wore.

“Rest for now,” the priest advised. “When you are well enough, we will speak again.”
